Edge Look To Weather the Storm This Weekend

By Michael Kennedy

There's a lot of excitement coming into this weekend for the St. John's Edge and their fans. The Edge are coming off a productive business trip through Ontario that saw them come home with a 3-1 outcome and a couple of wins against contenders the London Lightning and Sudbury Five. The Island Storm come into town to battle St. John's for a pair of games looking to right regain some momentum after going 1-9 over their last ten games.

For the Edge, the game plan is simple. Keep playing the disciplined, unselfish brand of basketball that has gotten them nine wins over their last dozen games. St. John's boast a balanced attack and reliable bench players who can step up and lead the team on any given night. Cane Broome, the reigning NBL Canada Player of the Week, and Montay Brandon have been especially crucial for the Edge. Meanwhile, veterans Junior Cadougan, Old Ashaolu and Tyrone Watson have provided the leadership to keep this squad focused.

The Storm, on the other hand, suffered back to back losses at the hands of the Moncton Magic this past week. PEI has been dealing with some injuries and illness over the last while but they're also struggling to produce a strong effort on both sides of the basketball.

It's an especially notable weekend for the Edge as both games carry a lot of significance both on and off the court.

Saturday is 'Shine The Light Night' in support of Iris Kirby House. The game gets underway 6:00 PM at the Mile One Centre. Our team will be wearing commemorative purple jerseys that will be auctioned off at the game and volunteers from the Iris Kirby House Foundation will be on hand to collect donations.

The second tilt is slated for Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. Fans are encouraged to join us as we celebrate and pay tribute to the career of Newfoundland's own, Carl English. In honour of Carl's retirement, the Edge organization will retire his number 23 and hoist his jersey to the rafters of the Mile One Centre.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.mileonecentre.com, by phone at (709)576-7657 or by visiting the Mile One Centre Box Office.
