Edge Battle Hard, Lose to Defending Champs in Preseason Matchup

 

St. John’s, NL – The St. John’s Edge dropped their first and only preseason game to the Moncton Magic at Mile One Centre on Sunday.

 

The afternoon matchup saw the almost entirely new Edge roster outscore the Magic in the first finishing the quarter up by two with the score of 22-20. Threes from Karrington Ward and Jesse Jones edged St. John’s with a late push over the Magic in the first. A Moncton timeout less than a minute into the game broke up the opening drive. This one would go back and forth until the end of the quarter, when the Edge took the lead. Karrington Ward lead the Edge in the first quarter with six points.

 

Into the second quarter, the back and forth continued. They Edge continued to pour on the offense with contributions from several players. The Magic looked to Marcus Lewis who lead the team scoring nine points in the quarter. For the Edge Montay Brandon came off the bench to lead with five points for the quarter. This was not enough to recapture the lead, however and the Edge finished the quarter down by 8 with the Magic leading 47-39.

 

After the half-time break, the Edge refocused and got off to a quick start, bringing the game closer. A 3-pt shot by Maverick Rowan brought the game within four points. Moncton again went on a 6-0 scoring streak after the early push by the Edge. With over four minutes left in the 3rd Moncton would relax on the scoring and the Edge would made a late drive adding 12 to the scoreboard. Going into the final quarter the Moncton Magic lead 76-69.

 

Early in the 4th quarter Moncton’s Ronald Delph extended the Magic’s lead. Jesse Jones made a deep 3-pt, followed by points from Mike Edwards and a three from Cane Broome. Jones and Broome would continue to lead the scoring for the Edge through the rest of the quarter. As the game drew to a close, both teams were trying to find a way to score. Moncton would close this one out and take the game by 16 with a final score 104-88.

 

For the afternoon the Edge shot 26.5% from the 3-pt. outscoring Moncton 27-12. In the paint the Edge went 31-for-74. There were 6 ties and 2 lead changes in this one.

 

Offensively for the Edge, Jesse Jones, Karrington Ward, and Montay Brandon were all in the double digits. Montay was named player of the game with 13 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Jesse Jones had 16 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds. Karrington Ward had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist.

 

For the Magic they were led all afternoon by Ronald Delph who scored a game-high 24 points.
