Heartbreak in Halifax as the edge fall by one point to hurricanes
St. John’s, NL – In what could be described as an early season candidate for Game of the Year, the St. John’s Edge fell just short against the Halifax Hurricanes 112-111 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, NS. The Edge were able to overcome a 24-point deficit to have the game decided by the final possession.
Early in the contest the Edge fell behind, with Halifax shooting the ball well from the field and forcing 10 turnovers. Going into the half it was all Halifax, having compiled a 16-point lead with just 24 minutes left.
The big story was the Edge comeback late in the second half. Throughout the game the Edge had been relying on some key inside scoring by Dez Lee and the shooting of both Carl English and Maurice Jones Sr. The play of all three guys would continue and allow the Edge to climb back into the game half-way through the fourth quarter.
Maurice Jones Sr. would begin to find his way to the hoop on several occasions and convert on And-One opportunities to bring the Edge within 5 points with just under 3 minutes left in the game.
As the game wore on deep into the final minutes, the Edge were able to make key stops on the defensive end and capitalize on their quick transition offense. Carl English would make no mistake with a deep jump shot to bring the game within 2-points (106-104), then immediately following a stop, Dez Lee would make a lay-up in transition to tie the game with 1:20 left on the clock.
In the dying seconds of the game, a familiar face would again make his presence felt, when Maurice Jones Sr. would drive to the hoop for another And-One to give the Edge their first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter. With just 4-seconds remaining, an offensive rebound and put back by Keith Wright Jr. would give the Edge a 1-point lead.
With the final possession in the hands of the Halifax Hurricanes, they played spoiler to the St. John’s comeback when a Tyrone Watson floater fell in the hoop as the buzzer sounded.
The Edge were led by Maurice Jones Sr. who dropped a game-high 30 points, 18 of those points coming in the fourth quarter alone. Dez Lee again continued his solid play for the Edge, dropping 24 points and collecting 8 rebounds.
For the Hurricanes, they were led by Gabe Freeman who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
This road trip will now continue for the Edge as they have a travel day tomorrow and will head down to Cape Breton on Tuesday night for a match-up with the Highlanders. Game time is set for 7:30pm NL Time. Fans can watch LIVE via the Cape Breton Highlanders Live Stream link found on their website.
