Edge Cap Off Road Trip with Win

Edge cap off road trip with win over highlanders

St. John’s, NL – The St. John’s Edge capped off their 3-game road trip with a win over the Cape Breton Highlanders on Tuesday night by a score of 109-92. The team shot 53.1% from the field and 90% from the free throw line in the win.

Newfoundland’s very own Carl English took business into his own hands in the first quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the game for the Edge. He would continue his scoring into the second quarter hitting multiple threes even with the Cape Breton defense putting on a double-team to try and stop the veteran guard. On the night English would lead all scorers with 28 points, to go along with 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

In the low post, it was a turn around for the Edge as they dominated the boards out-rebounding the Highlanders 49-31. Keith Wright Jr. played well on both sides of the ball for the Edge turning away multiple Cape Breton shots at the rim and recording another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

Diego Kapelan was also a standout for the Edge on this night. Capitalizing on a zone defense that the Highlanders tried tot execute in the fourth-quarter, Kapelan would hit consecutive threes and force the Highlanders to drop back to their man-to-man defense. On the night he would finish with 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range.

With 5 players scoring in double-digits, the most impressive stat line of the night goes to Maurice Jones Sr., who was coming off a 30-point performance against the Halifax Hurricanes. The 5’7” guard recorded a triple-double on the night, 19 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. At the moment it is tough to stop Jones Sr. as he continues his stellar play for the Edge.

With the lineup making improvements on both ends of the floor, the Edge put together a complete game that ended with a big win. The team will be returning to St. John’s tomorrow night and will then have no games until December 14th when they host the Island Storm at Mile One Centre. Expect the momentum from this win to continue into the four-game home stand over the coming weeks.

December 14th is the Edge Toy Drive and the December 16th game will have Santa Claus and Buddy the Puffin taking pictures with the fans on the concourse. Tickets are still available for both games and can be purchased at the Mile One Centre Box Office, by calling 576-7657, or online at www.sjedge.ca.
