Edge Defeat Storm 112-104

St. John’s, NL — The St. John’s Edge picked up a big win at home on Friday night against the Island Storm by a score of 112-104 at Mile One Centre.

The buzz around the City of St. John’s for the past 24-hours was about the signing and debut of Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis. The 6’9” forward got a standing ovation as he entered the game in crucial minutes during the fourth quarter. Although he played limited minutes, Davis was a force and changed how the Storm defense had to defend the Edge. On the night he finished with 4 points, 1 rebound, going 2-for-3 from the field.

Through the first half the Edge were maintaining a solid lead and that play continued into the 3rd quarter. An early 4th quarter surge by the storm trimmed the lead to just a couple of points going into the final minutes of the game. The Edge were able to keep putting pressure on the Storm defense and open the gap leading to the 112-104 win.

No surprise of course, but Maurice Jones Sr. was able to continue his solid play, putting up a double-double of 23 points and 10 assists, this coming on the heels of a triple-double in St. John’s last game. He was able to work with created space and get to the rim to draw fouls. On the night he scored 11 of his 23 points from the Charity Stripe.

Carl English was again solid for the Edge after bouncing back after not starting the season with the team to heal up from injury, the Newfoundland native dropped 15 points on the night to help the cause down the stretch making two big three pointers from the corner. Another newcomer who made an impact on Friday was Obinna Oleka who contributed 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to record his first double-double in his first appearance.

On the other side of the ball the Island Storm were led by Russell Byrd who dropped 26 points in the loss, the former St. John’s Edge player was 10-for-20 from the field and was 3-for-9 from beyond the arc. Also, in double figures for Storm was Sampson Carter who dropped 25 points on the night.

The Edge were able to kick-off their four game home stand with the win tonight and will look to sweep the series with the Storm on Sunday at 2:00pm when the teams meet again at Mile One Centre.
