#4 - English Comes Home

By Michael Kennedy

Over the ten days leading up to February 23, 2020, we will highlight some of the greatest moments of Carl English's tenure with the St. John's Edge.

It was a match that just made sense. From the day the NBL Canada announced approval of an expansion team for St. John's there was constant speculation about local basketball legend Carl English signing with the team.

On November 15th, 2017 the newly named St. John's Edge formally announced the signing of English and professional basketball in Newfoundland and Labrador was suddenly very much a reality. The University of Hawaii product who had gone on to a tremendously successful pro career in Europe coupled with over a decade of service as one of the leaders of Canada's National Senior Men's Team undoubtedly was the ace in the hole for the Edge. He was local, he was charismatic and, oh yeah, he could really play basketball. This was the day that started it all. With his two oldest kids by his side and his brothers waiting in the wings it was clear that this wasn't just about basketball, this was about family and coming home.
